Writings, Essays and Stories
From the north of Scotland

I started writing these articles and essays some years ago, as a relaxation from my work as a pet portrait artist, guitar teacher, dog walker and taxi driver for my teenage daughter. Actually, I wrote the first essay, about my border collie, Patch, as homework for the French evening class which I was attending at the time. The idea was to read an essay out in front of the class, in French. I'm not sure how well my heroic efforts to master the French language went down at the time, but I rather liked the English version and it made me want to see if I could write more articles.

I've written fourteen essays and some odds and ends about excerpts from my favourite books since then, so I decided I might as well get them together on a website. I've illustrated most of them myself. If anyone has some comments they would like to make about my writings, they can reach me at: james@pet-portraits-scotland.com

Out of Africa
I wrote this after following the progress of the marine
who walked to John O' Groats wearing nothing but
a smile. Like him, the story wanders a little but
finally arrives at it's destination.
